Check the current rates before travelling. The british pounds can be exchanged in every bank and exchange office in Slovakia. Travellers' cheques can be changed at major banks and post offices. Credit cards can be used in most major hotels, restaurants and shops and most of the larger branches of major banks can give cash advances from credit cards. ATMs are quite common and can be used to withdraw cash.

Slovakia has been relatively slow to privatise, meaning that it's likely to remain a bargain for travellers far longer than the neighbouring Czech Republic. Food, admissions, transport and taxis are all cheap.

Location:

The Slovak Republic lies in central Europe. The country’s geography is characteristic due to the major differences in the height above the sea level. Central and northern Slovakia is a mountainous region – the Carpathian Mountains stretch all across this area. Southern and eastern slovakia is a lowland region, being an important agricultural area of the country. The Danube river connects Slovakia with Vienna and the Rhine-Main channel that harbours at the black sea.

Climate:

The Slovak Republic lies in the mild zone with the continental climate with very distinctive rotation in seasons. The average daily temperature is -2°C in the winter and 25°C in the summer. The coldest month is January; the warmest months are July & August. In average the snow keeps up in the highest locations for 140 days a year.

River:

International connections from Austria are possible on the Danube river which is also linked with the Rhine, the black sea and the main. Services are available from Bratislava-Vienna-Bratislava: Bratislava-Hainburg-Bratislava and Bratislava.

Rail:

The most convenient route to the Slovak Republic from western Europe is via Vienna or Prague. Slovakia’s network also provides direct connections with Hamburg, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, Bucharest, Moscow, Lviv, Vilnius, St Petersberg and Kiev.

Road:

The Slovak Republic can be entered via the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary or Austria. There is a motorway from Bratislava via Brno to Prague.
